Exactly on the border of Zuid-Limburg and Belgium, the river Maas (Meuse) swirls and bubbles over its shallow gravel banks. On this cycle route you follow the great river from Maastricht to Maasbracht via the characteristic Maas villages and towns of Elsloo, Stein, Urmond, Grevenbicht, Roosteren and Stevensweert. However, the entire trail along the river Maas at 1,152 km is considerably longer, and runs from the Langres Plateau, in France, through three countries; a true challenge to experienced cyclists.
On the River Maas Route Zuid-Limburg, you will see small ferries, sailing serenely by from the villages of Geulle, Berg aan de Maas and Grevenbicht to Belgium, the ships of Rederij Stiphout – sailing the waters of Maastricht – and the mysterious Woodhenge monument in the municipality of Stein. You will also cycle through the beautiful nature of the Elsloërbos forest, with its densely vegetated slopes, its many springs, lush primrose and wild garlic. On the way you will pass several huge works of art that have been especially placed for this project. There are numerous pleasant outdoor cafés and restaurants with a view of the river. You can enjoy this spectacular cycle route, by following the special Maas Route signs. Check out the teaser trailer.
There is nothing as annoying as a lack of clear signposting on your route. Despite continuous checks, a lack may still exist.
