Route

Kalkbaan Simpelveld tot de Vennbahn

This 19 km long cycle tour leads you from the village of Simpelveld to the German border. From there you cycle through the Aachen countryside to the hamlet of Vetschau. This typical linear settlement arose along the medieval connecting road between Heerlen and Aachen. On the way you will pass traces of history, like the remains of the ‘Westwall’: pyramid-shaped concrete blocks, used to stop tanks during WWII. Through Laurensberg, an Aachen borough, you cycle into the ‘imperial city of Aachen’, towards the beginning of the Vennbahn at the ‘Fischmarkt’.

This route is signposted with the special ‘Kalkbaan’ cycle route signs. In Germany, these signs are smaller and sometimes alternate with general cycle road signs. From Aachen city centre, you continue following the route via the German ‘Vennbahn’ cycle route signs.
